Cleaner needed for our lovely garden and buildings

Barracks Lane Community Garden (off Cumberland Road), is a beautiful green space and eco building at the heart of a vibrant community in Oxford. It is for everyone to use and enjoy by visiting on open days, for a private function or by coming along to one of the many events and activities that are held throughout the year.

We are based in East Oxford and looking for someone who could support us to keep the garden clean and maintained for 4 hours a week (with extra hours if required by the garden).

The role is flexible, to meet the needs of the garden, but also the caretaker. You would be responsible to the small board of trustees and work with the coordinator to identify what needs to be done each week. We envisage the role as 60% cleaning and 40% caretaking.

We are looking for someone who can undertake the following tasks:

  • Keep the gardens and buildings clean, particularly after events and bookings
  • Making sure there are toilet rolls, clean tea-towels and cleaning products available for use in the garden
  • Occasionally prepare boxes of logs and kindling for use in the wood burner and/or pizza oven (for community events)
  • Supporting our community engagement gardener in keeping the garden maintained, such as keeping the sandpit clean and tidy
  • Identifying and completing simple garden maintenance tasks
  • Maintaining a Health and Safety checklist for the garden, informing the coordinator if there are any problems
  • Keeping an eye on stock levels (soap, cleaning products, toilet rolls etc) and letting the coordinator know when to order

The role is on a self-employed basis and the pay is £13.16 per hour (the Oxford Living Wage for 2025).

For an informal chat about the role, please contact Tracy Walsh, coordinator on barrackslanegarden@yahoo.co.uk

To apply, please send a CV and covering letter to barrackslanegarden@yahoo.co.uk

including your experience of cleaning, caretaking and maintenance and why you would like to work in the garden.
